It’s been an awesome week so far and we’re excited about the conversation we had with illustrator and artist of People.com, Debra Cartwright, for this feature, on “What’s good about being a successful artist inspired by the big city?” Here’s what she had to say:
“I live in Harlem, so the city inspires me to create these illustrations of women with natural hair. Every time I walk down the street, I see a woman with what I consider ‘good hair’ — their natural tresses. It thrills me to see women embrace their natural texture. My illustrations of these amazing women inspire me to rock my natural hair, unapologetically.”
— Debra Cartwright is an illustrator who seeks to combine her passion for social awareness, history and minimalism through her illustrations of women that inspire her. She has worked for Essence Magazine, Conde Nast and now People Magazine.
