Split ends. We’ve all had them at one point or another, whether our busy schedule made us neglect healthy hair practices or by over-applying heat to our hair. They can be a real buzzkill to your tresses and can wreak havoc if left ignored. For many women, a haircut can be scary, especially if you’ve been holding on to dead weight for a long time or had a traumatizing experience with a scissor-happy stylist! Celebrity stylist Angela Stevens, our Senior Creative and Education Advisor, shared some realistic advice for those who have a hard time letting go of split ends. Here’s what she had to say: I hate to be the bearer of bad news but damaged split ends will only continue to get worse and split more. It’s best to cut the majority of the damaged portion at least 75% in order to create a manageable shape. The remainder can be cut sparingly every 4-6 weeks, depending if your hair is chemically treated or not, with proper conditioning or steam treatments to infuse moisture.
But just like weeds or dead plants, once the old is gone, the new will flourish more rapidly and look beautiful. Don’t be afraid of a haircut from a professional who is sensitive to your length preferences. Always keep this in the back of your mind: Natural hair with little to no heat or sun damage can go 6-8 weeks between trims, but chemically treated hair tends to require trims more frequently (every 4-6 weeks).
